Spirituality in Clinical Care - Increasing Skills and Confidence 

Adjunctive Cancer Care:  An Evidence Based Approach
The Tom Baker Cancer Centre Patient Education Series

This program reviews the evidence for 30 complementary therapies that can increase the quality of life for yourself and your family as you are dealing with illness.  You will learn more about:

  • Current scientific evidence and news from clinical trials
  • What has been shown to be beneficial
  • What is safe, and what may harm you
  • How to sort through and identify unreliable therapies and information
  • The risk and possible adverse reactions for several natural health products
  • Mind body therapies such as imagery, hypnosis, and meditation
  • Bodywork and physical therapies such as massage, acupuncture, tai chi, yoga
  • Special dietary approaches, spices, and foods that decrease risk of cancer
  • Energy medicine therapies such as acupuncture, prayer, and reiki
  • Helpful use of music, art, expressive writing, and humour

2:00 - 3:30 PM, Tom Baker Centre Auditorium.  Open to the public, free of charge.  Caregivers are most welcome.  Offered approximately once per month except in July.  Upcoming dates:  On Tuesdays, September 8, October 20, Dec 1, 2009.   


Participate in a 7 hour program where you will learn everything you need to know about sleep.    I will review the important evidence and current clinical trials on sleep and you will become very clear on your own personal health cost of not sleeping well.  You will complete a symptom checklist, sleep assessment, and sleep beliefs checklist.  You will formulate a plan to handle your obstacles to better sleep, make a commitment to change, plan your action steps, then learn and practice the key skills.  You will have a taste of focused breathing, the body scan, expressive writing, meditation, guided imagery, and many more techniques.  Diaries and a resource list are provided.  When the day is complete, you will have the skills you need to sleep well that evening.  This is a fun day where you will need your pillow and blanket!  The program includes the Sleep Well Tonight Personal Workbook

The Campaign to Control Cancer and the First Alberta Cancer Leadership Forum
As a member of the stakeholder committee, Chris helped stage the First Alberta Cancer Leadership Forum on May 29-30, 2008 in Edmonton.

Experience Complementary and Alternative Options for Cancer

Participants were able to experience several mind/body therapies that can improve symptoms and quality of life during cancer treatment and recovery. This was a special program made available by a generous donation from a cancer survivor.

Chris reviewed the current evidence for health-promoting complementary therapies that assist in recovery from surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Positively Pink, October 28, 2008, Calgary Telus Convention Centre.  
On October 28 at the Telus Convention Centre, 650 people attended this celebration of breast cancer breakthroughs and information.  Chris was available to answer questions about the current evidence for complementary therapies.

The Campaign to Control Cancer, August 24-25, in Banff.
Chris, with 27 others from 18 different provincial and national cancer organizations, was invited to discuss the mobilization of a stronger unified cancer community, and how to effectively implement the vision of the the Alberta Cancer Control Action Plan and the Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Act. 

Alberta Justice, June 28 in Edmonton, and June 29, 2006 in Calgary.
Chris presented "Practical Techniques for Better Sleep."  Recognize the price of sleep deprivation, and learn the skills to maximize this powerful and underrated health practice. 

City of Calgary Social Services Disaster Team, June 26, 2006.
Chris facilitated a dialogue about maximizing team communication and handling stress during a crisis situation.  Differences among  members contribute strength to the team.
